Also, get the Merlin app. It's a great way to learn birds around you, it has a number of features including song identification which is really quite great. Then, you can go down the eBird rabbit hole and build your life list and then create bird related art and enter it into contests. I can guide you :)
In my village, we have to bag our leaves. I always thought blowing them into the street would be easier, but after reading your story and how much angst it causes, I'm now glad to put leave into tidy paper bags at my own pace.
