I feel you on the ductwork hole. Two years into living in our 1926 home, I discovered a six-inch diameter hole in our basement ceiling ductwork (installed 10 or so years ago). The giant hole explains why a particular section of the kitchen floor always felt a bit warmer. Since we sealed up the hole, the rooms downstream from this hole now remain warm in the winter, and cool in the summer.
